Interior Design in Hampstead

Hampstead is one of London's most architecturally significant neighbourhoods. Its streets are rich with Georgian townhouses, grand villas and period cottages, many of them Grade II, Grade II* or Grade I listed and set within tightly managed conservation areas. Designing for homes here demands more than a strong creative eye. It requires a thorough understanding of listed building consent, heritage planning, conservation-area restrictions and the technical complexities of working with buildings that have evolved over centuries within a tightly knit community. Howark brings both: the creative ambition to reimagine these properties for contemporary life and the technical rigour to do so within the exacting standards that Hampstead's built environment requires.

Our most recent Hampstead commission was the full renovation of a Grade II* listed Georgian townhouse, formerly home to the landscape painter John Constable. Working alongside Flower Michelin Architects for the permissions and in close dialogue with heritage consultants and conservation officers, we navigated the detailed process to deliver a scheme that transformed the property across all five floors. The kitchen was relocated to the lower-ground level, restoring the original domestic layout, while a concealed fireplace was carefully uncovered and restored in the principal bedroom. Every intervention, from structural changes to the specification of individual door handles, was developed with full regard for the building's listed status. The project was featured in House & Garden in April 2026.

Within that disciplined framework, the interiors are anything but restrained. We created warm, layered spaces using a palette of blush, sage and ochre with a deliberately painterly quality, combining antiques, bespoke commissions and contemporary furnishings to give each room depth and personality. Custom rugs were designed to fit individual room proportions, handmade ceramic tiles and marble was specified throughout the bathrooms and a bespoke four-poster bed in limed oak, antique brass and polished plaster was designed in-house and commissioned for the principal bedroom. The result is a home that feels both creatively ambitious and deeply respectful of its heritage.

This balance of precision and imagination defines how we work with period properties in complex settings. Hampstead's homes present particular challenges: listed building requirements, intricate planning processes, period features that deserve preservation and layouts that often need rethinking for the way people live today. We are experienced in managing these competing demands and work comfortably alongside heritage consultants, conservation officers, specialist architects and building contractors to ensure every detail is handled with the care it warrants.

If you have a home in Hampstead and are considering an interior design project, whether a full renovation of a listed property or a more focused scheme within a conservation area, we would welcome a conversation.
